US-287 is shutdown in both directions after a garbage truck struck the pillars of the Erath overpass. TxDOT says the main lanes will remain closed overnight.

FORT WORTH, Texas — A garbage truck driver was killed Wednesday evening after the vehicle struck support pillars of an overpass on southbound U.S. Highway 287, also known as Martin Luther King Freeway.

Fort Worth police responded around 6 p.m. to the crash in the 3500 block of the freeway near Erath Street. Authorities said the truck exited the highway and collided with several supporting pillars of the bridge over Erath Street. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

All lanes of U.S. 287 were closed at Erath Street as a result of the crash. Southbound traffic was detoured at Berry Street and Vaughn Boulevard, while northbound traffic was directed to exit at Wilbarger Street or Miller Street. The Texas Department of Transportation said the main lanes would remain closed overnight, and motorists were advised to seek alternate routes.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
