Incident Description

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts board voted on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, to immediately shutter the main building, citing safety risks and severe funding problems.

Board materials and statements pointed to structural issues, including widespread corrosion, water damage, and a recent partial ceiling collapse in the Grand Foyer that released debris from about 60 feet. Officials described the building as “unsafe for continued occupancy.”

The center also faces acute financial strain, with projections of a large deficit and warnings that it could soon be unable to meet payroll or maintenance costs.

The vote came hours after a federal judge again blocked efforts to add President Trump’s name to the facade. Renovation plans involving roughly $250–257 million in federal funding have been under discussion for months amid ongoing litigation.
